| DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION The Merchant's House has been superbly restored and has many original 15th century features, including magnificent local stones. The charm of the house has been kept intact and antique furniture adds to the 15th century atmosphere. A medieval experience with all modern comforts! Entry is into a hallway. A stone arch leads to the spacious sitting/kitchen/dining room with superb, elegantly vaulted stone ceiling supported by stone columns at each corner. A wide stone spiral staircase leads to the two large bedrooms, both with ensuite bathrooms and sitting areas. On the first floor is a large double-bedded room of 35 sq metres with high ceiling and exposed beams, a sitting area and French doors opening to a tiny balcony. A 4m x 1.50m Florentine tapestry and 18th century fireplace (non-working) compliment the wall of exposed stones featuring a mullioned window. A "secret passage" (NB: the entrance is narrow) leads to the ensuite shower room with shower, WC and hand washbasin. Twin bedroom There is another large bedroom on the second floor, with a charming 19th century fireplace (non-working) and twin beds. One wall is of exposed stones where the former mullioned windows can be clearly seen. The ensuite bathroom features a big corner bath, shower, WC and hand washbasin. On the top floor is the private terrace/loggia with wonderful views over Roman-tiled roofs to the nearby hills. There's plenty of sun during the day so it's a perfect place to sunbathe, cool drink to hand! A summer kitchen (fridge, sink etc) and a gas BBQ make al fresco dining easy. Quality equipment includes a radio/CD/cassette player and washing machine. |

ABOUT SURROUNDING AREA This region, the Languedoc, is France's best kept secret. Sleepy villages of sun-warmed stones and red tiled roofs unspoilt by mass tourism abound. You'll find magnificent scenery ideal for rambles on foot or horseback amongst herb-scented hills, with deep gorges tumbling into cool, inviting rivers. It is France's largest, up-and-coming wine producing region and there are many opportunities to taste its excellent wines. Yet just 45 minutes away is the sophisticated town of Montpellier offering the arts, theatre, shopping and an international airport. An hour's drive takes you to splendid Roman towns such as Avignon, Nimes and Arles. A stroll through the streets of Montagnac, a village of 3000 inhabitants, takes you back through the ages, with its many 14th through to 17th century buildings and superb 11/12th century church. Over time the shops have changed of course and you will find several mouth-watering boulangerie/patisseries, mini-markets, bars, cafes, chemists etc. There is a small street market nearly every morning and an interesting large market on Friday mornings. Restaurants, supermarkets, a big weekly street market and many antique shops can be found in the lively, historical market town of Pezenas, 5 kms. There are festivals and concerts in Montagnac and neighbouring towns and villages throughout the year, plus summer concerts in the nearby 12th century Abbaye de Valmagne. Less than 10 minutes drive is the pretty little port of Meze, ringed with super seafood restaurants and a sandy beach. Perfect for a relaxed lunch at any time of the year. The tales of the rebel Cathars form an important part of the history of this region. A visit to some of their castles, now mostly magnificent ruins perched impossibly on craggy peaks with spectacular scenery, is a must. The wild Larzac plain makes a fascinating trip, taking in the well-preserved, fortified 15th century templar knights villages. Visit the nearby village of Roquefort and see how the famous cheese of the same name is made. You can taste and buy some to take home. ACCESS The closest airport is Montpellier, serviced by BA and Ryanair from the UK and direct flights from Paris. Montpellier also has an international train station and the TGV takes just 3-1/2 hours from Paris. The airports of Nimes, Carcassonne, and Perpignan are within an hour's drive, Toulouse and Marseille two and a half hours. |
