A short distance from the Rhone valley, and the Ardeche, lies Saint-Donat-sur-l'Herbasse. Its a village noted for its Bach music festival at the Collegial church of Saint Donat, with its lovely cloister; as well as it festivals of world and folk music. The surrounding low hills, pretty lanes, are surrounded by woodland, and orchards bearing fruit such as apricots, peaches, and cherries. Paradis Secret de Saint Donat, is hidden from a small village road, by a high hedge, which at both ends has access to secure parking for 2-3 vehicles. The house is in walking distance of shops large and small (though the owners provide 2 bicycles for your use to get bread and croissants from the bakers, amongst other needed supplies!). The house built in the 1960s keeps cool over the Summer months, and warm during the winter with good central heating - where it provides a good base for skiing in the Alps. DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION The house is almost hidden from the street by a high verdant hedge, that provides shade whilst parking. Entrance either by driveway or path, goes through a delightful small back garden, where the house can be entered via 2 entrances. The main entrance enters into a small hallway, with left, a room used as an office. To the right is the recently modernised kitchen, fully fitted and equipped with dishwasher, oven, induction 4 ring top, coffee machine, refrigerator, microwave, and breakfast counter. The cooker comes equipped with an outlet fan. An opening in the wall provides easy transfer of plates and food to the dining room, with table with 6 chairs (2 more can be found if necessary), as well as a piano with access via glass french doors into the garden, with views of the swimming pool. To the right of the dining room is the living room, with archairs, and sofas, with satellite tv (english, german, french channels), with DVD player. There are views of the garden and pool. The bedrooms are all on the ground floor. At one end of the house there is the master double bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom with washbasin and shower. At the other end of the house a corridor has 3 bedrooms off. Two twin bedrooms with 2 single beds in each bedroom, and one bedroom with a double bed. One of the twin bedrooms has its own TV, with DVD player. There is a bathroom with 2 washbasins, and 2/3 length sunken bath, with shower attachment. There are 2 seperate WCs in the house, each one near the bedroom areas. There is a storage room with deep freezer, washing machine, and dryer. The main house is surrounded on 4 sides by gardens - directly in front of the living room, the french doors open onto a grass lawn and a large 12m x 8m swimming pool, with retractable cover, diving board (depth is 2.5m in the deep end, 1 m in the shallow end). At the end of the swimming pool, is a large pool house, with a covered area with dining table to seat 8, as well as various sun loungers for sunbathing. The pool house comes fully equipped with a electric cooker with hob, refrigerator, and dishwasher. There is seperate WC with washbasin.  The property as a whole is not overlooked, but there are areas where an apartment in a renovated mill overlooks, and the large grass field is overlooked at the side. The pool area and close to the house are very private. There is wifi internet access. |

SAINT-DONAT-SUR-L'HERBASSE AND SURROUNDING AREA Only 15 minutes drive from the Rhone artery A7 from Lyon to Valence and South of France, and a similar distance from A49 to Grenoble, the village of Saint Donat sur l'Herbasse, is easy to access and well located to disover this beautiful area of the Drome, as well as neighbouring Ardeche, and the Alps around Grenoble. The large village dating back to Roman times when it was known as Jovenciacus, where originally the druids built a temple dedicated to Jupiter. In the 8th century the relics of Saint Donat, created the basis of the Church and Collegiale of Saint Donat, dominating the town from a small hill. The Chapelle des Eveques is of note with roman vestiges. Nowadays the Church and its fine organ, are at the center of the annual festival of the music of J.C.Bach. The village, has a number of bars, top quality restaurants, as well as a good selection of shops of all kinds. Nearby for lake bathing you can go to Lac de Champos, an artificial lake with cabins, campground, beaches and restaurant/bars. Other notable sights in the surrounding area is Palais Ideal de Facteur Cheval - a palace created by a postman in his part time - a miracle of fantasy built at the beginning of the 20th century, which was much lauded by the surrealists. Also at the village of Hauterives, where the Palais is, you can get lost in Les Labyrinthes - 4 mazes that will amaze you! If you seek a more bustling town - go to Romans, with its shoe museum, and chiming clock tower. Or Valence, with magnificent Cathedrale St Appolinaire. Or Tain L'Hermitage for its renowned wines of the Cotes du Rhone. Or Vienne, a town abounding with Roman architecture including Temples to Auguste and Livie; de Cybele; and the largest roman ampitheater in France at Theatre Romain. Of course those seeking hot restaurants, hot nightclubs, and art / music on the cutting edge Lyon is not too far away. During the winter Paradis Secret de Saint Donat is about 45 minutes drive from nearest of the ski resorts - Villard de Lans; others around Grenoble, include Autrans, St Perre de Chartreuse amongst many many others. ACCESS International airports are at Lyon (60 minutes, 100kms - Most airlines), Grenoble (60 mins, 50 kms - Easyjet, Ryanair, Transavia ), Saint Etienne Boutheon (1 1/2 hours, 100 kms, Ryanair), Chambery (1 1/2hr, 170kms - Flybe, Snowjet, Jet2). TGV connections can be made at Valence / Romans-sur-Isere (25 mins, 22 kms). |
