ROQUEBRUN
Roquebrun,
is sometimes referred to as the "Little Nice" of Languedoc.
It has a microclimate, which makes life warmer in the winter months (a
mimosa festival in January). The village cascades down a hillside, with
at the top the ruins of a castle, which is next to a glorious Mediterranean
garden, with a large variety of flowers, cacti, as well as walks that
lead off into the wild countryside beyond. The picturesque village streets,
are highlighted by the church and the arched gateways, and lead down
to the main road, which is lined with restaurants and looks over the
bubbling river Orb. The river is perfect for canoeing or bathing. The
village has a grocery store, bakers, as well as a number of restaurants
(reservations necessary for Sunday lunch!)
SURROUNDING AREA
Nearby
sights and villages include St Chinian, which has a colorful Sunday
market, as well as numerous restaurants; Fontcaude Abbey; and the Gorges
d'Heric, with its towering cliffs of rock and stunning views. Thirty
five minutes drive is the cathedral city of Beziers with a charming
old quarter, and famed for its bull fighting and festivals during the
Summer
months. Ten minutes further are the endless beaches of the Mediterranean
- be it Cap d'Agde, Valras with beaches
for naturalistes and "textiles" alike. Further down the coast
is Narbonne, with lovely Cathedral, a good Sunday market, roman ruins,
and nearby Fontfroide Abbey. For those seeking castles - Carcassonne
is one of the most splendid in Europe, featured in many films. For
the athletic climbers - the dizzying heights of Peyrepertuse and Queribus,
in the Corbieres, provide testament to the defence and beliefs of the
Cathars.
For pursuits of the body - wine is king in these parts, and Saint Chinian
and Minervois, produce deep textured reds, and resonant whites - with
many a cave to taste and savor wines for immediate consumption or taking
home. For Golf - a number of high quality courses are accessible at
St Pons, Agde, Beziers, and the surrounding area. The river Orb is
not only good for bathing, but also for canoeing and rafting - and
a number of companies provide rentals, as well as portage. For pedestrian
pursuits - almost every village has signed paths from 1 hour - to whole
day walks, to suit all tastes. Books and maps are readilly available
in the local tourist offices and general shops.
