Southern France Guide recommended restaurants
Restaurants recommended by the Guide Restaurant La Passiflore - A restaurant that serves excellent food, with excellent service. Has one of the best lunch menus around, and food is always of a high standard. Perfect eating inside or out on the terrace; catering both for intimate conversations and family groups. Auberge La Selette - For the sheer enjoyment of eating out - this restaurant is open late in the evening and is often open when others kitchens are closed. Perfect for families with children - this restaurant is child friendly - with an outside play area. Auberge de l'Ecole - Eat at this cheerfully decorated restaurant in the muscat wine village of St Jean de Minervois. Come with a large apetite, as portions are large, and the food tasty. Ask for muscat as an aperitif! Auberge de St Martin - Another restaurant in a school - enjoy the carefully and delicious selected dishes in a friendly environment Restaurant La Portanel - For those that love fish and a view - visit this formal restaurant in the lovely village of Bages, with views of the etang with its flamingos, and the distant towers of Narbonne cathedral Lo Cagarol - In the village that has its streets shaped like a snail, is this very charming restaurant perfect for a distinguished meal with salads and dishes that are always surprising and a taste experience Chez Pierrot - For those with children, or in a large group - Chez Pierrot is perfect for those that love the open air, great pizza, and moules - here there is seating for 500 or more, but the food is magically on your table in no time at all - in this effecient restaurant - close to the Med and Narbonne in the village of Vinassan. This restaurant is yet to be listed on the Guide but is a favorite of mine. Restaurants recommended by visitors to the website From R.E., Vancouver, B.C., Canada "I'm new to your site but but my wife and I travel frequently in the Languedoc. I import quite a few wines from the various Languedoc appellations. Have you encountered La Boucherie in Magalas (between Beziers and Bédarieux) as yet? It's a butcher shop by day, but a restaurant at noon and in the evening. Monsieur Lefevre, the chef, is a former circus type. Madame, who handles the room, is a former dancer. Lots of good basic food and character here. You might also check out Poilhes - Chez Nany, just southeast of Capestang (between Beziers and Carcassonne), which is a totally funky hole-in-the-wall right in the village. Madame presents bowls and platters of stuff plus whatever is the special that day. It caters to the locals, for it's obviously too humble for the tourist crowd, but it's the kind of place we like to find. You could also check out L'Arrosoir, in Morgon, near Roujan (between Beziers and Clermont L'Herault). Chef is from Alsace. One of the few places--maybe the only one--I've found in the Languedoc with Alsace wines on the list. Then there's the very spartan hotel Restaurant Du Minervois in Pepieux (Between Carcassonne and Minerve). You get whatever madame is cooking that day, plus a jug of red of rose from the local cave. Great spot to stop for an inexpensive lunch, but the tourists pass it by because you have to walk through a nondescript bar to get to the formica-like dining room." From K.F, Pouquoi Pas
"Have you ever tried the restaurant "le Pourquoi Pas" near Capestang? We're
located in the middle of the countryside, overlooking the Canal du Midi,
between la Croisade and Capestang. Established since 1990 (see the "Petit
Fute guide") and open from the beginning of April to the end of September
each year, the majority of our clientele is from Beziers, Narbonne and the
surrounding area. We are very small, often full and reservations are
strongly recommended: tel 04 67 93 37 94." From A.C, London, UK "Our favourite is the Pizzeria 'Le Gondolier' at Castelnaudary (between Toulouse and Carcassonne). What makes the impact are the proper pizzas in feu de bois, good fresh salads, seafood platter excellent and great ice cream sundaes. Decent cheap house wine in pichet too. Excellent atmosphere. Outside tables on square (I think it's the Place de la Republique) 04 68 23 03 41. Another we liked was the Jardin d'Anais in Cascastel (in the Corbieres). Terribly chi-chi Provencal inspired decor, but perfect presentation and service, good food, set menu with or without wine(s) included. I don't carry the phone number for this on my person, but there's only one!" From C & A. B, UK "La Terrasse, Minerve - A delightful find, perched beside a small garden terrace just above the ancient footbridge at the entrance to this enchanted village. We had a light lunch in the dining room which seated about 30-40, decorated with old crockery and farm implements. Family owned, very friendly and obliging staff and excellent food."
