LA FORCE AND SURROUNDING AREA The village of Montréal, with its imposing collégiale perched on the edge of the horizon, is just four kilometers from La Force, and offers a magnificent view of the Pyrénées (ideal for skiing and hiking) and their rolling foothills. To the east the Mediterranean beaches of Narbonne, Gruissan, Leucate and many more offer seductive landscapes, plus attractions and activities to suit all tastes and ages. For lovers of history, ‘La Cité’ of Carcassonne transports you back to the 11th and 12th centuries. This wonderful example of medieval architecture is truly unique, having miraculously survived the turbulent centuries! With its narrow, cobbled streets, Gothic towers and panoramic views, it provides a romantic backdrop to this beautiful and fascinating region The area, particularly the Corbières, abounds with Cathar castles, ancient abbeys, historical villages – some of the unique “circular” variety so peculiar to the region – grottoes and pre-historic caverns, all of which conspire to create an atmosphere of real mystery Village markets (Mirepoix, Castelnaudery Bram) and local festivals (Carcassonne, Limoux) lend an authentic feel of regional life and culture. The Black Mountains provide a cool and rugged retreat from the intensity of the Mediterranean hinterland, offering lakes and spectacular mountain scenery. Walk or cycle along the banks of the Canal du Midi, or why not enjoy it the more traditional way in a Peniche (barge) boat? For wine lovers, this region offers several names of distinction, including the renowned Minervois and Corbière wines, and also the lesser known, but equally distinctive wines of the Malepère (La Force itself lies directly on the Malepère wine route), the Cabardés, La Clape and Fitou areas should certainly not be ignored. A tantalising array of vineyards leave keen tasters literally spoiled for choice, and owners are only too happy to let you enjoy a ‘dégustation,’ and sell you the odd bottle or two! Blanquette de Limoux, the local sparkling wine, is an absolute must. Rumour has it that the “secret” of champagne production was in fact stolen from Limoux by the viticulturists from the Champagne region, so Blanquette is the “true” champagne! Buy a bottle and judge for yourself! And of course, wherever you go, gastronomic delights are there to tempt your taste buds and compete for your attention. Whether it is in the splendour of a château, or the humbler surroundings of a village restaurant, you can be sure of enjoying good food, good wine and good service. If you are interested in taking a creative course in the area - painting, golf, wine tasting - take a look at French House Party ACCESS There are international connections by air to both Carcassonne (20 mins) and Toulouse (45 mins) where car hire facilities are available. Other international airports are Montpellier (2 1/2 hours), Perpignan (2 1/2 hours), and Barcelona. There are also regular train services to the station in Bram which connect into the high speed TGV rail services throughout France. |
