ST THIBERY
St Thibéry is a thriving pretty village, that dates back to Roman times when it was called Cessero, which gives its name to the local wine. Nearby one can see the remains of the roman bridge that carried the Via Domitiana over the River Hérault. The abbey and church in the village date from the 14th century. A short walk away is a beautiful medieval bridge dating from 1597, that is now only used for pedestrian traffic. The village boasts 2 bakeries, 2 butchers, a fishmonger, a small supermarket, and a couple of bars.
SURROUNDING AREA
A mere 5 minutes away is the town of Pezenas - sometimes referred to as the Versailles of Languedoc, because it was the royal court of the Languedoc. It became an artistic center - attracting Molière, and others, who played to an audience of the wealthy who owned the houses that can still be seen today. It is a wonderful town to visit, and wander, with many restaurants and antique stores. 15 minutes in the other direction, there is Agde, with its fortress church, and Cap d'Agde, with its marina, nudist colony (50,000 in Summer!), and miles of continuous beach providing inexhaustible places to bathe, and enjoy the Mediterranean
The cities of Beziers and Montpellier are also close at hand, offering a large variety of shops, restaurants, bars, and theatre. Beziers, has a wonderful flower market on Fridays, and a seemingly month long festival over the Summer with bull fighting. Montpellier is more cosmopolitan, with art galleries, stunning modern architecture, a thriving university, and shops and nightlife, with a younger ambiance. Inland there is the lovely village of St Guilhem le Desert, with abbey church, and surrounding hills provide perfect country walks.
ACCESS
International airports are at Montpellier (20 minutes), Carcassonne (75 minutes), Toulouse (2 and 1/2 hours) , and in Spain at Barcelona (3 1/2 hours). Beziers and Agde railway stations are 20 minutes.
