The French House Party Embroiderers’ Course Experience the creative power of pencil, paint and pattern. Our inspiring Creative Arts tutor Susan Keverne is offering the chance to join a unique holiday in France for creative embroiderers whose artwork involves using a variety of mixed media, textiles and stitch. Susan is well-known and respected for her lectures and workshop sessions with embroiderers in the UK. Now, for the first time, she is presenting a full five-day break with the French House Party in medieval Carcassonne, South-West France. The French House Party provides exclusive, villa-based arts, wine and leisure breaks for private groups of individuals who want a European holiday with a different approach; people who place a premium on superior quality of accommodation and personal service. This is an all-inclusive five-day holiday and we pride ourselves on the fact that there will be no unpleasant surprises when it comes to paying the bill. All accommodation, all meals (including any taken at the excellent restaurants we choose), all wine, all tuition, all materials and all transport in France – including airport transfers from Toulouse or Carcassonne – is contained in the price. The house is close to the Canal du Midi in one of the most magnificent and beautiful areas of France. It has a large private swimming pool, a tennis court and a boules pitch, perfect for a relaxed game on an idyllic French evening when the work of the day is done. Our first-rate chefs present four-course evening menus of outstanding quality and they also offer an in-house wine-tasting on one of the evenings, at no extra charge. Artists or would-be artists will discover challenging and innovative ways to express themselves by traversing creative boundaries and exploring more experimental methods during Susan’s daily workshops. You will be guided and encouraged in the development of your own ideas, at your own pace, with plenty of personal support and tuition. A basic supply of fabrics and other equipment will be provided. Students will be advised on what else to bring on each specific course. Course Tutor Susan Keverne After a formal art education, Susan Keverne pursued her personal interests in Chinese art, fashion and textiles which led to jewellery-making, mosaic work, book illustration and numerous commissions for paintings, murals and greeting cards. She has taught art in both the state and independent school sectors to students between the ages of 7 to 18 years fulfilling National Curriculum requirements. Says Susan: "My approach to teaching art is relaxed, informal but constructive with individual and sensitive tuition encouraging development of style, skills and technique." |

- | Creative Writing Sarah's writing seeks to affirm and question our place in the world. She says "My workshops explore our real and imagined lives, with writing games and exercises that rely on play, memory and a sense of adventure. Reading is as much a part of the sessions as writing. Hopefully you'll discover new writers and be reacquainted with old friends. "Whatever you write within the sessions may become something you develop later, or be part of something you're already working on, but our focus will be to limber up, stretch ourselves and write with renewed vigour and joy." What Sarah's students say: "One of the best managed/facilitated courses I have ever attended. Enhanced my listening to and respect of other people's voices enormously." "Sarah really is a genius. The way she got such a mixed bag of people to unlock their inner creativity was amazing and the house and all that great food and wine go a long way to making this a break to remember. I was sorry to say goodbye to our merry band." "It was all very smooth and well-organised. Our brilliant instructor really made a difference .... a wonderful break, it certainly exceeded my expectation. Thank you for providing such a wonderful opportunity" "Invaluable. I have a clear plan of attack now, feel enthused, focused and much more confident both in myself and with future work." "The whole experience has made me think differently about myself - seeing myself as a professional writer rather than a bumbling amateur." Course Tutor Sarah Hymas Sarah is a poet, a puppeteer and short story writer. Her short story collection, Closet Collection, was published by Businesslike in 1994, and since then her writing has appeared in anthologies, magazines, multimedia exhibits, websites, dance videos and brochures. Most recently her work has appeared in the British Council’s New Writing15, The Rialto, Magma and Agenda. From 2004-2006 she was the inaugural poet in residence for Calderdale Libraries, contracted to promote poetry reading throughout the borough, and worked with two visual artists in creating an art book, Reading is Believing. Before that, for five years, she was a member of a company of writers, 3dV, who wrote collaborative performance texts they toured around the North West. Currently she works for Litfest in Lancaster, as the editor of Flax Books, an independent publishing imprint of digital and print anthologies and translations. She delivers professional development sessions for writers throughout the region, both on a one-to-one basis and for groups. She has worked as a creative writing tutor for the past ten years, with undergraduates, in adult education, the mental health sector, prisons and primary schools. She edited and co-designed many of the resulting anthologies of work. She also collaborates with a musician, as Hymas&Lewis, to create sonic art which they perform all over the north-west of England. She has written the libretto for an improvised opera, ‘Flocking’ and writes lyrics for the Afro-funk band ‘DC Dansette’ and other singers. This year she has been devising, scripting and performing puppet shows for children, based on classic fairytales. She works with marionettes in and out of a small portable theatre, made by her grandfather. For about Sarah Hymas visit http://www.myspace.com/shymas |

The truly energetic can get up with the sun and join a yoga or aqua-aerobics class, take a short walk or cycle down to the Canal du Midi before breakfast - and then tackle a morning's full exercise programme after it. Fitness softies might take a more leisurely approach to their exercise. Perhaps a morning aerobics class or joining an organised walk in the Pyrenees, a little swimming, tennis or boules - and then they might wish to submit to a body massage or facial after lunch. At-home beauty treatments are also on offer. Our experienced fitness instructor Deane Hart operates a flexible and fun programme with plenty of options for all abilities, ages and fitness-levels. We can arrange squash and tennis coaching - and even a fun outing to a go-karting track. "Revisiting art after decades of only consuming it in galleries and books was scary but exhilarating, challenging and fantastically satisfying. Would I go again? Absolutely. Tomorrow." - Sheena Hastings, Yorkshire Post Course Tutor Susan Keverne After a formal art education, Susan Keverne pursued her personal interests in Chinese art, fashion and textiles which led to jewellery-making, mosaic work, book illustration and numerous commissions for paintings, murals and greeting cards. She has taught art in both the state and independent school sectors to students between the ages of 7 to 18 years fulfilling National Curriculum requirements. Says Susan: "My approach to teaching art is relaxed, informal but constructive with individual and sensitive tuition encouraging development of style, skills and technique." Course Tutor Paul Priestley I was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire some time last century. In my early years, I became the proud owner of a Blue Peter badge, won for a poster I designed of Bradford’s City Hall. Spurred on by this monumental achievement, I went off to Stockwell College and emerged some years later as an art teacher. I ran a very successful art department at a grammar school in Southend for many years, before taking the momentous decision to leave teaching and move to Herefordshire. Shortly after arriving I set up my own business: Filbert Splosh art experiences. For the past five years I have run my own painting and drawing courses at venues all over Britain. I have exhibited my work many times at the Southend Open Exhibition and at other venues in Brentwood, Essex, Halifax, London and Herefordshire. | My art is driven by a fascination of people and landscape and the infinite variety of feelings, emotions, drama and imagination they both engender. Mix that with a passion for colour and the sheer pleasure gained from the feel and application of and you have some idea of what motivates me. More about Paul Priestley on his website |

- | Books & Drama Experience Between the Lines With a view of the Pyrenees upon opening the shuttered window of your 300-year-old farmhouse, you'll spend five sumptuous days drinking red wine, eating food from local farmers' markets (olives, cheese, pâtés, melons, and eggplants, to name a few), and studying a list of books that only an eccentric British literature major and her actor partner might come up with. Besides five or so books, you'll also study a play—handpicked by Masters, an accomplished actor and director who recently retired to France—that compliments the literary theme. (from National Geographic book "The 100 Best Worldwide Vacations to Enrich Your Life", publlished Oct 2008 ) Our Books/Theatre collaboration twins our exploration of novels and plays with drama workshops. St. Raymond's combined course means analysing two sets of themed texts - with perhaps a film thrown in - and at least one play, usually by a modern playwright. From Page to Performance Christopher and Moira will involve guests in stimulating discussions on 'authorial intent' and the relationship beween the written word and the spoken (or even unspoken) performance of a writer's work. We will look at the differences in approach between the two genres and then turn to the more methodical matter of how actors prepare for their roles. Then we'll put some of what we have learned into practice. Get ready to encounter 'Stan the Man' and to indulge in laughter-overload while doing some little bits of serious acting with us. It might just possibly change your life. Course Tutors Moira Martingale is an established journalist, having worked as a feature-writer and columnist for national and regional newspapers and magazines. She is the author of internationally-published books and her present novel is nearing completion. She has a teaching qualification, an honours degree in English Literature and Psychology, and a Doctoral degree in English Literature. Christopher Masters was educated at King's College School and trained as an actor at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He spent ten years as an actor and then worked as a freelance director, later starting his own theatre company, Millstream, directing contemporary classics which toured nationally and internationally until 1998. |
